An IATA code is a 3-letter designator for thousands of transportation locations around the world, defined by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Generally used for airports, codes are also assigned to intermodal locations such as train stations, bus stations, heliports, ferry ports, and seaplane bases. For larger cities that service multiple airports, a city designator is often assigned (NYC, LON, PAR). IATA codes are primarily used by travel agencies in Global Distribution Systems (GDS) when booking travel, such as Amadeus, Galileo, Sabre, Worldspan, and Apollo.
